Understanding Vitiligo: Causes, Symptoms, and Diagnosis

Updated: Jun 17, 2025

Vitiligo is a skin condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It causes the loss of pigmentation in patches on the skin, resulting in lighter-colored areas. Although it’s not life-threatening, Vitiligo can significantly impact a person’s self-esteem and emotional well-being. Understanding Vitiligo is the first step toward raising awareness, promoting early diagnosis, and providing better care.

What Causes Vitiligo?

While the exact cause of Vitiligo is still being studied, there are several theories that scientists believe play a role:

  • Autoimmunity: In many cases, the immune system mistakenly attacks melanocytes (the cells that produce skin pigment), leading to depigmented patches.

  • Genetics: There’s evidence suggesting that a family history of Vitiligo or other autoimmune conditions can increase the risk of developing the disease.

  • Oxidative Stress: Environmental factors, including chemicals and prolonged exposure to UV light, may trigger the condition in some individuals.

Symptoms of Vitiligo

The most noticeable symptom of Vitiligo is the appearance of lighter skin patches that appear on various parts of the body, often in areas exposed to the sun. These patches may grow larger over time. Other signs include:

  • Premature graying of hair or loss of color in the mucous membranes (inside the mouth or nose).

  • The patches often start around body folds like the wrists, elbows, or knees.
